From October 2021 to December 2021, speech and hearing screening tests were conducted on about 1000 children in slums located in Mirpur-10 and Duaripara under Dhaka North City Corporation in collaboration with Prayash Institute of Special Education and Research (PISER), Dhaka Cantonment. Prayash is a specialized organization that values ​​holistic development of all children with special educational needs through multi-dimensional program. Proyash is functioning under the patronization of Bangladesh Army. Under this program we identified around 100 children who needed urgent treatment and special caring. A dedicated team of 10 experts from Proyash conducted the program for about 3 months. The affected children have been shifted to Dhaka CMH for treatment with the help of Proyash.

Objectives of the Program:

1. Early Identification: To conduct a comprehensive speech and hearing screening of approximately 1,000 children to identify any disorders or special needs at an early stage.
2. Collaboration: To leverage the expertise of Prayash Institute of Special Education and Research (PISER) in assessing and addressing children’s special educational and health needs.
3. Holistic Support: To promote the holistic development of children by ensuring timely diagnosis and appropriate interventions.
4. Specialized Treatment: To identify children in need of urgent care and facilitate their access to specialized treatment and support services.
5. Awareness and Capacity Building: To raise awareness among families and caregivers about speech and hearing challenges and how to support affected children effectively.

Outputs of the Program:

1. Screening Conducted: Approximately 1,000 children were screened for speech and hearing issues over a three-month period.
2. Identification of Urgent Cases: Around 100 children were identified as needing urgent treatment and specialized care.
3. Collaboration Outcomes: A team of 10 experts from Proyash successfully conducted the screening and evaluation.
4. Treatment Facilitation: Affected children were shifted to Dhaka CMH (Combined Military Hospital) for further treatment with Proyash’s support.
5. Capacity Strengthening: Families and caregivers were informed about the issues, treatments, and the importance of early interventions.
6. Community Impact: Enhanced the community’s ability to address the needs of children with speech and hearing challenges, ensuring their better integration and development.
